Oscar Predictions 2013: Best Animated Film.

This award has only been going since 2001 when Shrek won. It was a poor year for animated films but since then the winners have included Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away, stop-motion British film Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and not to mention six Pixar films. This year sees a large collection of different animated films from all over the world, but who will get nomianted and who will win?

The short list of potential aninmated films has been released by the academy, containing ten films from all over the world.
 Brave.
  Frankenweenie.
  Hotel Transylvania.
 ParaNorman.
 Rise of the Guaradians.
 From Up on Poppy Hill.
 The Pirates! Band of Misfits.
 The Rabbi's Cat.
 Wreck-It Ralph
 The Painting.

So who out of this lot has a shot at picking up a nomination? Well, despite getting the best reviews for the Madagascar film series by far, sadly Madagascar 3 isn't on the list so it won't be seeing a nomination at this years Oscar.

Disney can rest easy, as this year the best animated film will have its name on it. It looks like it could be a three way race between Pixars Brave, their other CGI film Wreck-It Ralph and the stop-motion black and white remake of Burton's own short film Frankenweenie. Yawn, doesn't Disney always win this thing? What about Up on Poppy Hill, which won both the Animated Picture of the year at the Japan Academy Prize and Tokyo Anime Award? The academy voters love a good Japanese anime, especially one from Studio Ghibli. Perhaps the french animated films The Painting or The Rabbi's Cat could see their way to getting a nomination?

I can't see Hotel Transylvania or ParaNorman picking up nominiations with Frankenweenie in the mix, despite my personal opinion that they were both better films. Oh, and Pirates! Band of Misfits doesn't stand a chance at seeing it's name get called. I enjoyed it though but felt it was missing something.

With all this in mind, here are my predictions for Best Animated Film:

1. Brave.

2. Reck-It Ralph.

3. Frankenweenie.

4. From Up on Poppy Hill.

5. The Painting.

What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? Or have I forgotten something you think should be nominated? Let me know.

  1. The Rabbi's Cat looks awesome! I also can't wait to see Up On Poppy Hill. Strong contenders this year!
