Well, after rush releasing the lead single from Artpop this week in a state of 'pop emergency', Lady Gaga has now unveiled the official video for Applause and frankly... it's a bit of a mess.
Directed by Inez and Vinoodh (a Dutch fashion photographer duo), the promo shows Lady Gaga in numerous states of dress and undress, which includes a clam bra, giant puffy clouds and hands over her bare breasts. There are certain looks which I absolutely love, including the top hat and the smeared makeup, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
In recent years, it feels like Gaga has just tried to cram more and more into her videos in a desperate attempt to be as quirky and unusual as possible. The problem is, it's all a bit too much. What look is the promo going for? 80s pop? Art deco? Slutty magicians assistant? And seriously, what the hell is up with the swan? The words 'trying too hard' don't even begin to sum up how horrendous this scene is.
Don't just listen to me though, make up your own mind and check out the video below.
"Make it real loud (put your hands up, make 'em touch)"
Don't get me wrong; I don't hate this video and I think Applause is definitely a grower but it's just so hard for anyone to live up to the hype that Gaga always manages to whip up prior to a big release. I'd love to see her tone it down a bit for her follow-up and just focus more on the actual music. This may not be Gaga's best video to date by any means but I'm sure the little monsters will fall in love with it anyway.
But what do you think? What's your favourite look? And did the promo live up to your expectations? Let me know what you think by commenting, liking and sharing below.
