The Best Supporting Actress category has seen some interesting winners in the last decade, including two winners from musicals as well as seeing more comic roles then the traditional dramatic ones that we normally see in the best actress category. Previous winners include Penelope Cruz, Renee Zellweger and last year, Octavia Spencer, for her brilliant performance in The Help. But who will be joining this list of talented woman this year? Let's have a look.
This seems to be the only category to have a clear front runner this year. Since the first trailer for Les Miserables came online, everyone has been talking about Anne Hathaway. She's been on top of many peoples prediction lists without anyone actually seeing the film, just a minute and a half clip of her singing I Dreamed a Dream. Pretty impressive for the woman who was in The Princess Diaries.
Amy Adams has been getting lots of buzz for her work in The Master. This will be her fourth time in this category, could this finally be the year the academy feel it's her turn? I don't think this is the performance to do it for her, but it will help her build momentum for her eventual Oscar win, which I believe one day she will get.
Sally Field, a previous two time winner, is sure to pick up a nomination for her role in Lincoln, but will the academy have finally forgotten that God awful acceptance speech she made? I sure as hell haven't. "You like me, you really like me".
Helen Hunt's name is quite high on most peoples lists for her performance in The Sessions, which sees her play a professional sex surrogate and has seen her gain her best reviews since she won the Oscar back in 1997. It's a pretty safe bet that her name will appear on the list of nominations come February.
It seemed for the last few months that people had dismissed Nicole Kidman's performance in Lee Daniels The Paperboy, while the film received very mixed reviews, one thing everyone agreed on was her stand out performance. Kidman was absent from most peoples list until she received a surprise nod at the SAG awards and then the Globes, the academy loves her and she now looks like a lock to get her fourth nomination and first in the supporting category.
A possible upset could come from the much loved and multiple award winner Maggie Smith, who was by far the best thing in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Or could we see Jackie Weaver's name being called out for her well received work in Silver Linings Playbook? While I thought her performance was good, it wasn't Oscar nomination worthy for me.
Here are my Predictions for Best Supporting Actress:
1. Anne Hathaway - Les Miserables
2. Amy Adams - The Master
3. Sally Field - Lincoln
4. Helen Hunt - The Sessions
5. Nicole Kidman - Paperboy.
What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? Or have I forgotten something you think should be nominated? Let me know.
Its a good list but I think Smith has a better chance in getting a nom that Kidman is and why is Amy Adam is over Hunt? Hunt by far has way better chance than Amy is.
ReplyDeleteHunt may be better then Adams but the academy has a tendency to vote for people they feel are owed an oscar especially if they haven't won before, I feel that this could be the case here. As for Smith over Kidman this one could go either way, but Kidman is still my choice.
